It’s feeling like summer on the peninsula, which means it’s officially humpback season in the Salish Sea! The Strait of Juan de Fuca – the humpback highway – has been filling up with hungry whales over the last couple of weeks as they return from their breeding grounds in the tropics. We’ve had incredible sightings of feeding behaviors like lunge feeding and bubble netting, and surface activity including breaching, pec-slapping, and tail-lobbing! Many of our local “regulars” have already been spotted, notably Divot and her brand new calf (her 6th since 2011)! With a start this spectacular, we can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store. – Naturalist Rachel R.
