This past Tuesday, guests and crew aboard the Red Head departed from Port Townsend in search of wildlife. We started heading toward the Strait of Juan de Fuca, but just a few minutes into our journey, orcas were reported in Admiralty Inlet, so we turned around and headed that way! After a short cruise, an eagle-eyed guest spotted half of the T37 pod close to the Whidbey shoreline, where they were sharing a recent kill. We got to see some unique hunting behaviors like tail slapping and even some moonwalking from T37A2 “Inky.” After they finished their snacking, matriarch T37A “Volker,” Inky, and youngest sibling T37A4 “Crinkle” set off together, heading north up Admiralty Inlet.

For us, the day wasn’t done yet! Mere feet from where we were watching the orcas, we set eyes on a humpback whale that was actively hunting the small baitfish in the area. We watched them for some time and got to see some beautiful fluke action from BCX2064! With two sightings down, we headed north to Point Wilson, where we were able to pick up our third whale species of the trip — three dispersed minke whales! While these critters remained slinky, we got a few good sightings of one of the individuals before setting our course back for Port Townsend.
